Quick answer: A GarageBand vocal preset is a saved patch with the EQ, compression and effects for a vocal already set. On a Mac, you unzip the download, move the patch folder into ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches/, restart GarageBand, then pick the patch from Library > User Patches on an audio track.
A vocal preset saves you the hour you would spend choosing plug-ins and guessing settings. You record, pick the patch, and hear a finished vocal sound. This guide shows the Mac install step by step, how to set levels so the preset works, and what to do when a patch does not appear.
What a GarageBand vocal preset is
GarageBand calls a saved channel setup a patch. A vocal patch holds a chain of effects, usually EQ, compression, a de-esser, reverb and delay, plus the Smart Controls knobs that move them. Patches you add yourself appear under User Patches in the Library.
A preset does not fix a bad recording. It gives you a strong starting point. Your mic, your room and your input level still decide how good the result sounds.
What you need
- A Mac with GarageBand installed and updated.
- The preset download (a .zip file). Unzip it first by double-clicking it.
- A microphone and, if you use one, an audio interface.
- Headphones, so the mic does not pick up your playback.
How to install a GarageBand vocal preset on Mac
Quit GarageBand before you start. Then follow these steps.
- Unzip the download. You get a folder that holds one or more patches (each ends in .patch) and an install guide.
- Open the patch folder in Finder. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and type ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches. If Finder says the folder does not exist, create the missing folders with those exact names.
- Copy the patches in. Drag the .patch items from the unzipped folder into the Patches folder.
- Open GarageBand. Create a new project, then choose Audio > Microphone and click Create.
- Open the Library. Press Y, or click the Library button at the top left of the window.
- Find your preset. Scroll the Library list to User Patches. Your preset appears there. Click it to load it on the track.
The folder path above is the one our preset install guide uses. If a download comes with its own guide that names a different folder, follow that guide.
How to use the preset
Loading the patch is half the job. These five steps make it work.
- Set the input. Select your mic as the track input. Turn on Monitor only if you wear headphones.
- Set the level before you record. Sing the loudest part of the song. Aim for peaks well below the red zone, as a starting point around the upper-middle of the meter. A clipped recording cannot be fixed by any preset.
- Record dry. Many vocalists like to record, then add the preset sound while mixing. If you record through the preset, you still keep the raw take on the track as audio.
- Open Smart Controls. Press B. Use the knobs the patch gives you. Move reverb and delay first. They change the feel the most.
- Check it in context. Play the beat and the vocal together at normal volume. Fix the vocal level before you touch any other control.
What to adjust after you load a preset
No preset fits every voice. These are the common adjustments. The ranges are starting points, not rules.
| Problem | What to change | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Vocal sounds harsh or sharp | Lower the high-frequency boost in the EQ, or turn down the de-esser threshold | Small moves, 1 to 2 dB at a time |
| Vocal sounds thin | Add a little low-mid body in the EQ | Around 150 to 300 Hz, a few dB |
| Vocal is buried in the beat | Raise the track volume before you add more EQ | Use your ears, not a number |
| Too much echo or wash | Reduce the reverb and delay amount | Turn each down by about a quarter, then listen |
| Vocal jumps in loudness | Use more compression or ride the track volume | Gain reduction of about 3 to 6 dB on the loud words |
The preset does not show up: fixes
- Restart GarageBand. GarageBand reads the Patches folder when it opens.
- Check the folder name. A missing space or a wrong letter hides the patch. The path is Music > Audio Music Apps > Patches.
- Check you are on an audio track. A vocal patch appears for audio tracks. Software instrument tracks show a different list.
- Check you copied the .patch items, not the .zip. GarageBand cannot read a zipped file.
- Restart the Mac if the Library still hides the patch.
- If an effect looks missing, GarageBand may not include every plug-in that a Logic Pro chain uses. Presets made for GarageBand use what GarageBand has.
GarageBand on iPhone and iPad
The Mac steps above use a Patches folder that iPhone and iPad do not have. We have not tested vocal presets on iOS, so we do not claim they work there. Check compatibility on the product page, or with the seller, before you buy any preset for a mobile device.
Common mistakes
- Recording too loud. Clipping ruins a take. Lower the input level and record again.
- Judging the preset at high volume. Loud sounds always seem better. Compare at a moderate level.
- Stacking extra effects on top. The preset already holds a full chain. Adjust it before you add more.
- Skipping the room. A closet full of clothes or a rug and a duvet around the mic cuts echo more than any plug-in.

Frequently asked questions
Where do GarageBand vocal presets go on a Mac?
Put the unzipped .patch items in ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches. Restart GarageBand. The presets appear under User Patches in the Library when you select an audio track.
Why can't I see my vocal preset in GarageBand?
The usual causes are a restart that did not happen, a wrong folder name, or a zipped file that was never unzipped. Check the path, copy the .patch items, restart GarageBand, and select an audio track.
Can I use Logic Pro presets in GarageBand?
Not directly. The two apps use different preset formats, and GarageBand has fewer plug-ins. Use presets made for GarageBand, or rebuild the settings by hand with GarageBand's own effects.
Do GarageBand vocal presets work on iPhone or iPad?
We have not tested them on iOS, so we make no claim. The Mac install uses a folder that mobile devices do not have. Check compatibility with the seller before you buy.
Is there a free GarageBand vocal preset?
Our free preset, Toronto Warmth, is made for Logic Pro X. For GarageBand, our lowest-cost option is a single $10 preset or the $19 Starter Pack. You can also build your own chain from GarageBand's built-in effects.
